As part of our activities week 15 students and 3 staff travelled to North Wales for a mountain experience trip. The students comprised of 12 year nines and 3 year twelve students who were all looking forward to an action packed three days of activities.
Day one saw them bouldering (low level climbing without ropes) with a ‘knockout’ style challenge to finish the afternoon off. This was followed by a scramble up onto the summit of the Glyders to stand on the famous cantilever stone, a large rock balanced on top of the mountain. It was such a hot day that the students had to cool their feet off in an cool stream during the return and were rewarded with an ice cream upon reaching the bottom. The ice cream was a cunning plan to ensure they were unable to ‘squeeze’ through the Idwal Squeeze, a large crack in a rock which is not for the claustrophobic!
Unfortunately the weather then took a turn for the worse, but the students were not put off by this and completed a 12 mile hike with some amazing stone skimming (12 was the record!) before an early night. Kayaking and indoor climbing rounded the trip off in good style, with every student getting soaked either jumping or trying to balance on upturned kayaks, or climbing free swinging ladders indoors, overhanging walls and tree trunks at an indoor climbing centre.
Feedback from students included – the trip was too short, the most eventful trip I’ve been on in a long time, he had a very memorable trip, he was tired wet and smelly but full of tales from his adventure.
